Login gdm theme causing problems

Question:

Hello. I just installed the sunset login theme, and ever since, I have been having some weird login-related problems:

First, I downloaded the package to the desktop, went to the login options, and installed it. I chose it, and logged out so I could see it. My screen went black, and put about eight lines of text on the screen, each of them ending with [OK]. The little _ underscore just sat there blinking for about a minute. I pressed return, and the underscore just moved down a line. I pressed the power button (didn't hold it down), and my computer continued to shut down, just as if I had selected it from the Quit dialog.

Open stickynotes with a keypress

Hi all,

I'm a big fan of the Gnome Stickynotes applet (http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11854.html) -- I much prefer using it to Tomboy or similar.

One thing the applet lacks is a keypress to open all notes. So I set about working out how to do it myself.

This can be achieved by installing the wmctrl package and then executing the command

Code:
for item in `wmctrl -xl | grep "Stickynotes_applet" | awk '/0x.*/ {print $1}'`; do wmctrl -i -a $item$; done

Updated, Networking Icon Disappears?

Question:

I just updated 75 packages and the networking icon disappeared from my "Notification Area Applet"... How can I get it back? (And I don't mean the Network Monitor that goes directly on the panel; when I right-click the one I have in mind, I get the option to Enable/Disable Networking.)

Thanks!

The FAQ

Compiz
What is Compiz Fusion?

Compiz is what is known as a "compositing manager." It enables your desktop to run faster than with traditional window managers, and allows you to be more productive. Compiz controls the effects you see on your desktop: Shadows, animations, "the cube," and a whole bundle of other fun effects.

How do I know if Compiz is enabled (How can I disable Compiz?)

HowTo set OpenDNS as DNS in DHCP Environment

Submitted by k4tz on Sat, 08/02/2008 - 09:19

Due to the recent vulnerability in the worldwide DNS
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/22...tacks-reported
http://www.doxpara.com/?p=1189
can be useful to change the DNS provided by your provider and use OpenDNS instead.

Here is described two ways to do it for DHCP users (for users that have a static IP is pretty straightforward).

1) Change DNS permanently
Edit:

Code:
sudo nano /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

OLPC gaining momentum in India?

  • OLPC

To describe India’s relationship with OLPC as “rocky” would almost be an understatement. Back in 2006 for example the Indian Ministry of Education was very critical of the project and called it "pedagogically suspect". Later that year some Indian organizations came together and announced their work on a “$10 laptop”.
