  • OpenOffice

These are just a summary of tips relating to OOo3b which I use when I set up OO. I am posting them here in the hope they might help others who get stuck. If readers have more tips (or easier solutions) add them to the thread.

1. Changing the default template font
- Open OpenOffice and start Writer. Change the font to the one you prefer
- then go File - Templates - Save
- give it a suitable name and then click Save
- next, go File - Templates - Organize
- double left-click the My Templates folder in the left pane and you should see your new template listed as the name you chose
- right click it and select Set As Default Template
- close the application, then restart it. When you open a new Writer document the default font should be the one you selected.

2. Changing the icon set
- go Tools - Options then expand OpenOffice.org so you can select View

This list consists (mostly) of terminal programs which use framebuffer to show images, web pages, videos etc. You can do all these without using X at all!

1. To enable mouse support in the terminal install gpm:

Code:
sudo apt-get install gpm

Then edit

Code:
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permission.rule

and add the following line to the end:

PART A. CLI versions of Ubuntu
Do you know that there are four different versions of cli-only ubuntu?

PART B. CLI Resources
Pages every cli fan should know about.

PART C. Framebuffer Programs
Watch videos without running X at all!

PART A. CLI versions of Ubuntu

Different command line versions of ubuntu:

(1) The alternate desktop cd with the F4 option

(2) Minimal CD available from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...tion/MinimalCD

(3) Server CD

(4) Ubuntu Jeos available from http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whati...eredition/jeos

Comments

(1) and (2)
As far as I can tell (1) and (2) install the same basic ubuntu CLI version. I really like this version. It has no server stuff. Useful as a base system for a custom system build. For example install openbox. Or just use it as is. Good for old boxes. I use one in an old computer to practice command line and listen to music using MOC.

At the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco this week, IBM strengthened its ties with the open source community by announcing partnerships with Canonical, Red Hat and Novell.

SAN FRANCISCO (BetaNews) - IBM hopes adding its software to distributions of Ubuntu, Red Hat, and Suse Linux will help consumers transition to become "Microsoft-free."

Specifically, IBM is working to ensure its Open Collaboration Client Solution, including Lotus Symphony, Lotus Notes, and Lotus Sametime, operate with the three Linux distributions.

Canonical confirmed during the show that it will distribute Lotus Symphony through its own Web services before the end of the month. Red Hat and Novell are expected to follow suit.

CompTIA Breakaway, held in Orlando, Florida, this week, was a successful conference for hundreds of VARs and managed service providers. Foolishly, open source companies that need channel strategies skipped the show. Here’s why The VAR Guy was alarmed.
