Starting a Desktop Install without GDM
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy

----

Hi Everyone,

This took me quite a while to get working (I couldn't find anything on the web) so I thought I'd post here. Stopping and starting the X-server is easiest done with the service commands (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop) and (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start) but I would rather be able to choose from grub (when the computer is booting) whether or not to start the graphics.

Intro

"Why would you ever want to do this?" is a very good question which I'll not go into in detail here. I use it on a laptop that I'd like to have start and stop very quickly and with minimal resource use but still have to option of getting into gnome if I want.

In a bid to speed and simplify server application installations, Canonical is developing so-called virtual Ubuntu Linux Server appliances, The VAR Guy learned at LinuxWorld Expo.

According to Canonical VP Malcolm Yates, the virtual appliance strategy will allow Canonical and its ISVs (independent software vendors) to develop software bundles that are easily installed and configured — with little or no need for integrators to master key hardware configuration steps.

The reason: A virtualization software layer will sit between server hardware and the operating system/applications. As a result, the virtualization layer will handle much of the hardware configuration issues, while VARs and integrators navigate a few simple steps to get Ubuntu Server and specific applications up-and-running.

When Linspire was bought by Xandros, everyone expected changes. No one expected Xandros to decide to switch Freespire back to Debian from Ubuntu but that’s exactly what’s happened.

LinuxWorld Enterprising engineers will soon get the chance to find out how Openmoko's Linux-powered phones work and to modify them.

Barely a month after shipping the Neo FreeRunner, Openmoko has said it plans to make the schematics for this - and the Neo 1973 - publicly available under a Creative Commons (CC) license.

No date was given but Openmoko promised publication in "due course" with schematics available from openmoko.com and openmoko.org.
