WiFi -
First and foremost if you want WiFi to work in Linux the DO NOT turn it off in Windows. A mistake I made and have learnt from. Turning off the WiFi in Windows will disable the WiFi in Linux, completely. The best you can hope for then is that the interface shows up in ifconfig. It will not broadcast or detect any signals. You can ensure it's on by the presense of the the WiFi LED on the front of the machine.
Yes Linus, Microsoft hating is a disease. And it's a pandemic

The submission by Microsoft of twenty thousand lines of code to the Kernel has, predictably, caused many an eyebrow to arch. The phrase “beware Greeks bearing gifts” comes swiftly to mind. I checked the press release. I also checked the calendar just to make sure I hadn’t fallen into a wormhole and emerged back on April Fools Day. I hadn’t. That reaction was probably replicated right across the free software community. Given Microsoft’s track record it’s hardly surprising. Perhaps what was more interesting was Linus Torvalds’ reaction. After all, this is not an inconsequential flame war about using Gnome or KDE.

Package Management from the Command Line
Source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1223363
Hello everybody. I am writing this for someone here that once did a good deed for me. If you are reading this (you know who you are), thank you, it is much appreciated.
I like to work from the command line. I find that once you get to know it, it is often quicker to do the tasks you need to do (especially as an administer). Here is a quick front-end to common management tasks (installing/removing pacakges, package information...) that you may do everyday on your machine. It's pretty well commented and include's help by just typing the command. I call it dm (debian management) and the syntax is simple:

Allow WiFi on Ubuntu to start automatically before log in
Source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1214940
I often find myself, despite having a lightning-fast boot with Ubuntu, waiting at my desktop for something to start. I started looking at what I do with my computer, investigating my bottlenecks. One of them was my wireless network. Even though I have a perfectly functional wireless card and I work within mere feet of my router, I often find myself waiting for the wireless to start before opening my web browser.

How to share mobile broadband in Ubuntu using GUI
Source: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/howto_share_mobile_broadband...
Like many people who aren’t able to get DSL, I use mobile broadband. Typically, at least in Ireland and the UK, you are forced to purchase a modem with your contract. What if you want other devices in your house to use this broadband and you don’t want to fork out several hundred wing wangs for a mobile broadband router like the Novatel MiFi when you have a perfectly good modem and wireless router already? In Ubuntu you can setup the modem-connected machine as a robust router/firewall using the in-built Network Manager, Firestarter, and optionally, Gadmin DHCPD. These are all GUI tools and so there is no need to go near the dreaded command line here.
