Comprehensive Guide to Customising GDM and XSplash

Preface
This guide is my statement to those people who think that the new GDM login screen is un-customisable.
At the beginning of this month, I started playing around with a Netbook I bought back in August. Installed Karmic UNR, and started playing about with it.
One thing I was looking for in the first place was a consistency across the UI. From Splash Screen, to Login Screen, to Desktop.
Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 Battery Icon
Question:
I suppose this should go here seeing that desktops don't have batteries normally.
Just upgraded... everything is going ok for the most part. Just noticed that the battery charging state/ plugged in icon is displaying what I can only assume is the default icons and not the icons in my pack which displayed fine in jaunty (of course). Does anyone have any clue as to the issue here. I'm guessing the battery applet is not looking for the icon in the same place as in juanty. Any ideas?
How to create a complete, snappy and beautiful Ubuntu Desktop

In this tutorial I will try to show you how to install and setup a whole ubuntu system. You might ask what is supposed to be so special about it. Special about it is that we will somehow build it "from the ground up". We will start with a very minimalistic installation and will expand the functionality step by step. It will take longer to have a running production system than the normal ubuntu installation via liveCD. But therefore it will be much more customized to fit just your needs which will result in shorter boottime, less ressource consumption and an all in all more responsive system. But we wont stop at the general package and system config. I will show you how to get an effective compiz-configuration that is aiming at workflow without blowing up your PC and an all in all good looking OS that is enyojable to work with.
